Day of Pentecost

Affirmation of Faith
(Apostle’s Creed)

“I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of Heaven and earth: And in Jesus Christ, His only Son our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead and buried; the third day He rose from the dead, He ascended into Heaven, and sitteth at the right hand of God the Father almighty; from thence He shall come to judge the quick and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Holy *Catholic Church, the Communion of Saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and life everlasting. Amen.”     *catholic—universal church of God

Scripture
Psalm 104:24-35 (NIV)

24 O Lord, how manifold are your works! In wisdom you have made them all; the earth is full of your creatures.

25 Yonder is the sea, great and wide, creeping things innumerable are there, living things both small and great.

26 There go the ships, and Leviathan that you formed to sport in it.

27 These all look to you to give them their food in due season;

28 when you give to them, they gather it up; when you open your hand, they are filled with good things.

29 When you hide your face, they are dismayed; when you take away their breath, they die and return to their dust.

30 When you send forth your spirit, they are created; and you renew the face of the ground.

31 May the glory of the Lord endure forever; may the Lord rejoice in his works—

32 who looks on the earth and it trembles, who touches the mountains and they smoke.

33 I will sing to the Lord as long as I live; I will sing praise to my God while I have being.

34 May my meditation be pleasing to him, for I rejoice in the Lord.

35 Let sinners be consumed from the earth, and let the wicked be no more. Bless the Lord, O my soul. Praise the Lord!

Sermon Scripture
Acts 2:1-13 (NIV)

The Holy Spirit Comes at Pentecost

1 When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place.

Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting.

They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them.

All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them.

Now there were staying in Jerusalem God-fearing Jews from every nation under heaven.

When they heard this sound, a crowd came together in bewilderment, because each one heard their own language being spoken.

Utterly amazed, they asked: “Aren’t all these who are speaking Galileans?

Then how is it that each of us hears them in our native language?

Parthians, Medes and Elamites; residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia,

10 Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya near Cyrene; visitors from Rome

11 (both Jews and converts to Judaism); Cretans and Arabs—we hear them declaring the wonders of God in our own tongues!”

12 Amazed and perplexed, they asked one another, “What does this mean?”

13 Some, however, made fun of them and said, “They have had too much wine.”

THE RITUALS OF THE CHRISTIAN
METHODIST EPISCOPAL CHURCH

(First Sunday Only)

The Sacrament of the Lord’s Supper

Or Holy Communion

The Invitation

Elder:  Ye that do truly and earnestly repent of your sins and are in love and charity with your neighbors, and intend lead a new life following the commandments of God and walking from henceforth in His holy ways, draw near with faith, and take this Holy Sacrament to your comfort, and make your humble confession to Almighty God, meekly kneeling upon your knees.

General Confession

(By the Elder; in the name of all those who are minded to receive the Holy communion, both the Elder and all the people kneeling humbly upon their knees.)

Almighty God, Father of our Lord, Jesus Christ, Maker of all things, Judge of all men, we acknowledge and bewail our manifold sins and wickedness, which we from time to time most grievously have committed, by thought, word, and deed, against Thy Divine Majesty, provoking most justly Thy wrath and indignation against us.  We do earnestly repent, and are heartily sorry for these our misdoings; the remembrance of them is grievous unto us. Have mercy upon us, have mercy upon us, most merciful Father; for Thy Son our Lord, Jesus Christ’s sake, forgive us all that is past, and grant that we may hereafter serve and please Thee in the newness of life, to the honor and glory of Thy name, through Jesus Christ our Lord.  Amen.

O Almighty God, our Heavenly Father, who of Thy great mercy has promised forgiveness of sins to all them that with hearty repentance and true faith turn to Thee; have mercy upon us; pardon and deliver us from all our sins, confirm and strengthen us in all goodness, and bring us to everlasting life, through Jesus Christ our Lord.  Amen.

The Collect:

Almighty God, unto whom all hearts be open, all desires known, and from whom no secrets are hid; cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love Thee, and worthily magnify Thy Holy name, through Christ our Lord.  Amen.

Sanctus

Elder:  It is very meet, right, and our bounden duty, that we should at all times, and in all places, give thanks unto Thee, O Lord, Holy Father, Almighty, Everlasting God:

Therefore with angels and archangels, and with all the company of heaven, we laud and magnify Thy glorious name, evermore praising Thee, and saying, “Holy, Holy, Holy, Lord God of hosts, heaven and earth are full of Thy glory. Glory be to Thee, O Lord, Most High.” Amen.

Prayer of Humble Access

Elder: We do not presume to come to this Thy table, O merciful Lord trusting in our own righteousness, but in Thy manifold and great mercies. We are not worthy so much as to gather up the crumbs under Thy table. But Thou are the same Lord, whose property is always to have mercy; grant us, therefore, gracious Lord, so to eat the flesh of Thy dear Son Jesus Christ and to drink His blood, that our sinful souls and bodies may be made clean by His death and washed through His most precious blood and that we may evermore dwell in Him and He in us.  Amen.

Prayer of Consecration

Elder:  Almighty God, our Heavenly Father, who of Thy tender mercy didst give Thine only Son Jesus Christ to suffer death upon the cross for our redemption, who made there (by His oblation of Himself once offered) a full, perfect, and sufficient sacrifice, oblation, and satisfaction for the sins of the whole world; and did institute, and in His Holy Gospel commanded us to continue, a perpetual memory of that His precious death until His coming again; hear us, O merciful Father, we most humbly beseech Thee, and grant that we, receiving these Thy creatures of bread and wine, according to Thy Son our Saviour Jesus Christ’s holy institution, in remembrance of His death and passion, may be partakers of His most blessed body and blood; who in the same night that He was betrayed took bread; and when He had given thanks, He brake it and gave it to His disciples, saying, “Take, eat; this is My body which is given for you:  do this in remembrance of Me.” Likewise after supper He took the cup: and when He had given thanks, He gave it to them saying, “Drink ye all of this; for this is My blood of the New Testament, which is shed for you and for many, for the remission of sins, do this as oft as ye shall drink it, in remembrance of me.”  Amen.

(Then shall the Elder first receive the Sacrament in both kinds himself, And then proceed to deliver the same to the other in like manner, If any be present.  Then shall he say the Lord’s Prayer, the People kneeling and repeating after him every petition:)

Our Father who are in heaven, hallowed be Thy name.  Thy Kingdom come; Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.  Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and ever.  Amen.

Prayer of Acceptance

O Lord and heavenly Father, we Thy humble servants desire Thy Fatherly goodness, mercifully to accept this our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving, most humbly beseeching Thee to grant, that by the merits and death of Thy Son Jesus Christ, and through faith in His blood, we and Thy whole Church may obtain remission of our sins.  And here we offer and present unto Thee, O Lord, ourselves, our souls and bodies, to be a reasonable, holy and lively sacrifice unto Thee; humbly beseeching Thee that all we who are partakers of this Holy Communion may be filled with Thy grace and heavenly benediction.  And although we be unworthy, through our manifold sins, to offer unto Thee any sacrifice, yet we beseech Thee to accept this our bounden duty and service not weighing our merits, but pardoning our offenses, through Jesus Christ our Lord; by whom, and with whom, in the unity of the Holy Ghost all honor and glory be unto Thee, O Father, world without end.  Amen.
